21 QUESTIONS

Privacy, in plain words

21 Questions is a game about how the people who know you see you. Here's exactly what that means for your data.

What we keep

The name you give us, your email once you add it, your quiz picks, and your answers. If you continue with Google, we receive your email and first name, nothing else.

If you add someone, we keep the name you typed (only you see it) and their email or phone, so we can recognise them if they join. It's never shown to anyone.

To keep things running we also keep a hashed version of your IP address (for limiting sign-in emails and spam), a log of emails we sent (30 days), and daily totals with no per-person data. That's it: no ads, no trackers, no selling data. Cloudflare hosts the app and sends our email.

Who sees what

Answers about other people are anonymous. Nobody, including the person you answered about, ever sees who said what. Your Mirror only shows combined results once at least 3 people have answered, results update weekly, and a trait only changes when at least 3 more people have answered about it (so one person's answer can never be read off a change), and later answers arrive with a random delay of up to a week. Nothing can be traced back to you. A few "most likely to" picks show on their own, never with a name. The person you answered about may hear that you answered, never what. We store who answered so you can delete it and so we can stop abuse; nobody else can see it.

Quizzes: anyone with a quiz link sees signed-up players' first names and scores on that quiz's leaderboard. A player without an email doesn't see their own score until they add one, and their row is shown only to the quiz owner, for 48 hours. The quiz owner sees how friends guessed only as combined totals, once 3 or more signed-up friends have played. While you guess, you may see how your pick compares with other friends' picks ("most friends picked this too"): only from 3 or more signed-up friends, and never whether anyone was right. If someone answers questions about you, we may tell you who answered, never what.

Your Mirror and Trust signal are private to you. The one exception is a Mirror match you choose: if you and a friend both agree to compare Mirrors, each of you sees the other's type and their Mirror's words (never scores) on the traits you both have. Either of you can withdraw at any time, which deletes it. Group awards are shared with that group, and only once enough of you have played.

Adding and blocking

Adding a person doesn't notify them. If enough people who know them answer, they may get one email inviting them to see their Mirror. It never says who added them or who answered.

You can block anyone from their page. Their answers about you stop counting and they can't play your quiz. They aren't told.

Emails

Sign-in and confirm codes and links; a Monday note when your Mirror changes; and short notes when someone plays your quiz, beats your score, or answers about you. Every email except sign-in links has a "Don't email me again" link.

Cookies

One keeps you signed in (180 days). One recognises the browser that asked for a sign-in link (400 days). One is used for 10 minutes during Google sign-in. No tracking cookies.
